Prosecutor Chris Logan intends to argue that Karl Dahl's previous convictions for exposure and child pornography served as a prelude to the disturbingly gruesome torture/murders of two children and their foster mother. But liberal judge Carey Moore rules that Dahl's previous criminal record is inadmissible evidence in the current trial. This extremely unpopular (if legally correct) decision is followed by an assault on Moore and Dahl's escape from jail. Minneapolis homicide detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska help look for Dahl, guard the judge, and attempt to determine if the judge's attacker was linked to the Dahl case or had an entirely different motive.
